Replacing Z jugs

I bought replacement jugs for my ZTU, new rings for all 4 pistons, new rod bearings.

I’m going to take it all to an engine shop and let him put the rings and bearings on, them put it all into the jugs.

Dumb question, but I’ve never done this before, is it necessary to hone the bores on the jugs? No problem if I need to, I just wanted to ask because I figure if I came this far on the engine, I want to do it the right way

I am pretty sure your machine shop will want to hone the jugs before installing the pistons and rings. Be sure to check the ring end gap as well.
That’s what I was wondering. I took it all apart, tracked down parts and gasket, then realized honing bores would likely be necessary.
I’ll post pictures on this thread, but I hope to finish this restoration (or revival), this fall sometime. Thanks for your help

You are missing one thing my boy. You need an experienced mechanic to help and show you how to do all this. Which is basic work and if you continue to work on tractors, you will know how to do it. May be your machine shop would explain and show this stuff.

I do agree. I know I’m spending a lot of $$ to get others to do simple things. Just not comfortable enough to try too much on my own. You’re right though. I’m 27 and my dad is pushing me to NOT send the magneto off for rebuild, but to keep it and learn and get it going myself since working on magnetos is something many folks my age are not learning

Like anything you need the manual but that only goes so far. Working with someone that does that stuff is how you learn. Yes some things need parts and special tools so easier to send out.

You also should check the ridge in the cylinders, you could break the new rings, the pistons go all the way to the top of the cylinder
