Reseal a CAV injection pump

Is this a DIY type thing? I've rebuilt a few engines and more carbs than I care to think about. Also rebuilt the 4 spd toploader in my 68. My mechanical ability kind of stops there. I know nothing about diesel injection pumps but I like to learn new things.

All depends on the expensive parts risk you are willing to take if a mistake is made. I get several pumps in for repair each year that owner or son Bubba tried to fix
themselves. Not fun to sometimes tell them the hydraulic head is seized and needs replaced..

Is there a manual for one? The shop manual for my tractor doesn't really cover them in depth.

I trained in a diesel shop back in the 1960's and was always told if you do not have
the tools, test gear and the "clean" room, do not work on any injection equipment.
Over the years I have stuck by that reasoning even though I had the paper
qualifications.

I am sure others have carried out serviceable repairs under the hedge or in the barn
but not me.

In later years I moved into designing electronics for harvesters etc. and now I am
often presented with heaps of electronic circuit boards to sort out that have been
"repaired" by unskilled operators to the point of a good "charring". :0)

Still it makes me money.

Just MHO.

Other than a top cover gasket or throttle shaft seal I consider any work done inside of a injection pump not to be a DIY thing.
Working on a inj pump without the proper tools and pump test stand to test and properly calibrate the pump is about like whizzing in the wind, the odds are against you.

Plenty of videos on Youtube. I'm in the same boat and I've got a seal kit. prices from 350 plus parts to 800 makes me want to do it myself. I resealed the Roosamaster pumps on GM diesels years back.

Just did my Lucas CAV DPA

I have a YouTube of the tear down and ill post one of the rebuild soon

Here is the video of how it goes back together Im no expert but i kept everything clean, lubed everything with diesel and a bit of oil on o rings

I made note of where everything was when it came apart and put it all back the exact same

Here is a manual I found online with diagrams
