Restoration process

So after you have the tractor torn apart down to the last bolt, where do yall start at for the putting back together? Do you rebuild each part as you remove it?

Depends on the condition of the tractor. Myself, I try to get it running and drive it around to see what's in need of repair. I will repair/restore clean and paint each section that I'm doing. Any bolts that come off get put in holes in cardboard, labeled, cleaned, and painted. Sheet metal gets painted all at once. A typical tractor will take over a year to restore, some have taken three, as I work on more than one at a time, that includes the ones I use for farming as they have a problem sometimes.

I'm with T on this one. Do what you have to do to get it running and driving. If that's an engine rebuild, do the restore on the engine so that is done. You may have to tear it apart again to finish all the frame painting, etc. but having it a running tractor before you start alleviates the questions in your mind as you work on it. steve

Most service manuals once you get to the end of the disassembly process will say installation is the reverse of removal. Then the section ends possibly with some reference to torque specs or other specific instruction on assembly.

Depending on if it’s one you use or is a restoration to show, how hard it is to access the parts you have taken off are they likely to break or wear and how difficult it is to find replacements. Budget. There’s alot that goes into it and the decision to disassemble a component.

Big project. Take alot of pictures of each assembly From all angles. If I can I put all the nuts, bolts and washers back in where they came out of. May be months before you get back to it.
Can’t say what to do first ,don’t know what the tractor is and what the project restoration requires ask far as your objectives. More details.
Make an outine of project and budget .
Most projects will take three times longer and budget matches the age and issues to correct.
As a help ,use the YT resources and find information that apples .

It depends on how far you're looking to take it, if you're looking to reset it back to factory or just get her up and running, I agree with Dennis, it's big project. Take lots of pictures and make sure the replacement parts are readily available, or for that matter any parts. You're going to run into quite a few hic-ups along the way a specially if you are not the original owner. I'm in the mitts of restoring a '59 550 right now, and trust me, it tests your patience. Good luck and have fun with it.
