Reverse Polarity check

I know it's been talked about b4 but I just cant find how I can make sure the polarity is good. I have a 52 TO 30, 6V pos ground with generator that I had to take apart to work on the steering finally I got time to put it all back together and I want to touch a long wire to where and where? Note: the voltage regulator is tucked in there so tight I cant read what the terminals are. There are three on the bottom and one on the top. Thanx in advance for any help

May or may not agree Jim. Full discloser- I did try to start it right after I put it back together and it didnt pop, IDK if that had anything to do with it, but when I tried the instructions above and got a spark it turned right over. Attaching pix of my work tractor. Now I gotta pay attention to the leaky rear wheel seals
