Reversed WD45 tractor question

I was on the phone with a gent this morning who has a reversed wd45 for moving snow. In our conversation he said it has 4 speeds (gears) going forward towards the bucket. How was that accomplished?

Reminds me back in the 80s when "jacking" the rear of cars was thought to be cool. A local kid turned the rear end over and put the springs on the top of the axle which was extreme to say the least. He was surprised when he could go like the devil backwards in drive.

Yes we did a few back in the day. Not all tractors could have that done though!!

I know the older Farmalls (H & M, at least) could be flipped like that. Sometimes by mistake!

I saw a Massey Ferguson 35 turned around so it could have a grain combine built on top of it. Tried finding the video but no luck, Australian youtube channel.


The picture here is a dedicated combine, but you can see how there could be a tractor hiding in there driving in reverse. Which makes you think how combines are kind of wasteful in running hard for a short time in the fall leaving an idle tractor the rest of the year.

The tractor was not reversed in the tractor/combine you saw. Ferguson also had a tractor mount hay baler that mounted on the right side. My Massey Legacy book shows the
British prototype picture you saw, the rear tire is reversed but the tractor is going forward. Book says about ten were built for testing. The way the diff case is made
on the TO 35 the diff can't be flipped over inside to reverse that tractor.

I saw a video of an actual physical tractor that was being talked about, not a book photograph. The tractor and video were in Australia, likely a little too far to ship prototypes for testing. It could have been a local Australian refitter that came up with new parts to enable it to work in the 70 years the tractors were out there. I looked again and didn't come up with the magic google terms to find the video. If I stumble into it again I'll post better details.

I know this is an old thread but I stumbled across a reversed wd45 and out of curiosity I was wondering, since the wd45 isn't a true "live" PTO would flipping the diff make the pto spin backwards?

NO.

No. The PTO is driven well ahead of the differential. The only thing flipping the differential affects is direction of travel.
