Riddle me this

Yesterday I was pulling a small stump with my '52 8N. As I was sort of bumping the stump with the draw bar the engine began running rough. I pulled out the choke a little and it ran better. Then as I kept on with the bumping it started running even worse. Again I pulled out the choke a little more and it ran better. Long story short is that I had the choke pulled all the way out and it was running better. It would die if I pushed the choke in. I let it run about half throttle and then it got to running worse even with the choke out. Then after about five minutes it stopped. I tried to re-start it but no go. I checked the points and they seamed good. I then turned the carb mix screw out a tad and it fired and ran well the rest of the day. I don't know what caused it other than maybe a little bit of dirt in the gas.

My first thought was that due to the bumping action the oil in the air cleaner had sloshed around and the carb had taken in some oil with the air. I don't know what happened but it's running fine now.

Anyone have a clue as to what may have happened to the engine ? Or may it has happened to you one time.

I'm all ears here.

Im betting you might have dislodged some dirt particals somewhere and Id check the screens first.

I'm thinkin' more in line with .....the fuel in the carb. bowl sloshing around, and the floats not knowing whether they were up or down, and when you turned the power adjust needle out a tad, you enriched the fuel for the engine to even out, and run! JMHO Fuel to air mix was changed!!!
Havin' to run with the choke out means....Too lean on the fuel.!!???
My 2N has done that on uneven ground, while plowing. Turning the power adj. needle out almost always smoothes it out. JMO
Also sloshing in the gas tank can/will cause the same thing!!??
periodical fuel starvation!!!

Sycamorecreek,If it was picking up oil from the air cleaner it would have smoked like a freight train.Im with Dunk! and it picked up water from the tank or carb bowl.Check the sediment bowl for dirt and water and drain the carb bowl out.

The oil is sucked up about a 9"-long column of SCREEN filter media innna the donut-tube. Ain't gonna happen. When ya turn yer engine OFF, the oil drains the trapped dirt DOWN into the oil cup where it settles out. Simple, eh? .......Dell

All that sloshing loosened up some sediment in your gas tank. Check your sed bowl and screens. Adjust carb by the manual. You will be fine.

typical 8 n they tend to do that runing over rugh ground they do it to mine has been doing it for a long time and i cant figer it out and i have 2 of those old 8 n

I think you have dislodged some dirt in the tank, or carb bowl. Pulling out the choke will help some with a fuel starvation issue, but I don't think it's more water than dirt, Choking ain't going to burn water, no matter how much choke you use. JMTC
