Right wrong or what ever

I removed the thermostat from my Oliver S88 this morning. When I drained the antifreeze you could not tell it was antifreeze. It came out the color of rust. I plan to fill it with water this time and run it and see if it gets hot. If it gets hot again I'll drain the water and fill with vinegar again and run it that way. It may take a few times of switching from water to vinegar and back to get it cleaned up

Old like you said right wrong or whatever but I never run a thermostat in any of my tractors. Just something to stick and make them run hot as far as I'm concerned. Never had any problems.

Old there is some radiator and cooling system flush products. I too have pulled some thermostats (summer use). I have seen some pretty plugged up blocks and radiators. Been threw that mess this summer.

Clr one little bottle plus water get it hot then drain
Liquid cascade get it hot then drain
Water one rinse get it hot drain
Add the Coolant.

If you don’t want to go buy expensive stuff and want a slightly stronger acid than vinegar that’s our recipe for a rusty one. Both items are in the house here

rich, i do the vinegar flush also. get the vinegar from costco. after the vinegar i mix baking soda and water and refill. run it a while, drain, flush twice and refill with antifreeze and distilled water. btw check your coolant temp with a candy type thermometer. my 42 m ran way hot, almost pegging the needle. did a temp test and the coolant was at 165 degrees, temp gauge was way off. was a new gauge.

I know it is getting hot. I did a bit of baling today and had a cylinder problem on the baler. Had a spare cylinder on a parts baler. Put it on and baled 2 bales shut it off to do chores and when I walked away from it I could hear it sort of boiling. The cooling system takes 4.5 gal but don't have enough vinegar on hand to do the vinegar flush so will have to get some tomorrow. I still need to bale more today so will do so but may have to baby it a bit to get done

I'd go to the hardware store and get a gallon of muratic acid. Dilute down to what you want.

White vinegar
But which one. ? There is 5 , 7 and 10
Percent vinegars. Really curious as I have yet to see vinegar do anything. The rad shops soak rads in a hot caustic tank. That cleans the cores out really good. And the vinegar I see is always clear. So was wondering what this white vinegar strength is ?

I have used bars leak before in a few radiators. When you drain it, it comes out. Rust colored looking. It’s possible at one time. You had a radiator leak in that tractor. Just a thought.

i use regular kitchen vinegar. it is not caustic, will not harm o rings on wet sleeve engines or water pump seals, and is non toxic to dispose of. it will dissolve calcium build up and loosens rust.

The top of the radiator it self looks like rust plus you can see the radiator tubes and you can see rust there allso

Nope. EPA banned those caustic tanks. Those tanks now are just used to pressure test radiators for leaks.

I have filled them up with straight white cooking vinegar and ran them to clean the rad out. It works good on old tractors in my part of the world where there's a lot of lime in the water and the old men that had them were too tight to buy anti-freeze. My 340 took 3 times of flushing it, and removed the thermostat before it ever would stay cool enough to run. And it still gets hot on really hot days, so probably need to flush it out again. And as someone else had said, none of mine have thermostats in them; I have trouble getting the old gas tractors to run right on today's gas when they have thermostats in them. They either get hot or won't run right.

I have had vinegar in it since yesterday. I plan to leave in in till I bale hay again which will be a few days from now and see if it gets hot running vinegar in it.

it is funny how many pieces 0f EQ. that just the out side fins are plugged ya they look clean but deep in side is the problem . i use brake clean about 2 cans then good strong flow of water from both sides and make sure you get all around the outer edge can be a pain to get at some spots but you got to get at them . good luck

I can see right threw the fins front to back or back to front and can feel the fan sucking in from the front so that is not the problems
