Is it possible to put a piece of sheet metal inside of a rim, then put on the tube and tire? My rim on my TO 30 is eaten up around valve stem area as big as a fist.

Holes in my rims have had pieces of 1/8 inch steel welded inside covering the bad area. just make sure the edges are ground down smooth. I put a piece of an old tube over the area of the repair before installing the tube just to be safe.

Yes, it's possible. I've done that. But if the hole is that big, I would buy a new rim. It's so much trouble to remove loaded wheels and tires, that doing it multiple times is a real pain.
