Easy if you have the tools and experience to do it. Challenging but fun if you haven't done it before but are mechanically inclined, have some tools, and don't mind buying a couple more to complete the job. Impossible if you have trouble remembering "righty-tighty, lefty-loosey."

The tractor must be split at the bell housing, which requires supporting the somewhat heavy halves of the tractor and rolling one away from the other. It can be done with blocking and a floor jack, but an engine crane/hoist or a set of splitting stands would be safer and easier.

Once the tractor is apart, you remove the clutch and pressure plate, then remove the flywheel. The old ring gear is cut off using a cutting torch. The new ring gear is heated to expand it so it can be dropped on to the flywheel. Everything is put back together.

If you dont have a torch get one. After splitting the tractor just heat the gear and it will be loose and come off easy.If it hasnt been reversed just turn ove and reinstall mite need to heat again to put back on ive done it many times. No need to remove the clutchassy. Now would also b e a good time to replace the pilot bearing in the crankshaft.

Split, yes. But no need to remove flywheel/clutch.....Just use a 'drift'/large punch(i like brass) and punch it off. just go around the circumference tapping. after a few taps, the ring will be off. No need to "torch" the gear off. Then heat the ring(i like to hang it from a bolt or something close by),then useing two pair pliars, set it on the flywheel. while still warm, tap it 'home'.I've always used oxy-accetelene,but I'll bet even a small propane torch would provide enough heat.

No Barnyard, you dont cut the ring from the flywheel. You risk damageing the flywheel(most guys cut too deep) with 'blowing' the
ring off.It it also unnecessary extra work.Dont even need to heat to remove.

When I did my C, I tried to heat the new gear with a propane torch. Never could get it heated evenly and hot enough. I ended up taking my gas grill out to the shop. After a few minutes on the grill on high, the job was done.
