It appears that new flywheel ring gears are unavailable for Case engine g148. Is it possible to remove old gear and flip it over then reheat and mount it? thanks

you would have to check the teeth if they are chamfered on both sides so the starter drive will engage. pretty sure they are flat on the rear side.

I have done that twice with Case SC tractors. Not one single problem. Did mine over 30 years ago. Years back I was at our small mom and pop Deere dealer to ask a question. While I was standing in the shop talking to head man. They were doing that very thing to a 4020 they traded for. If it's good enough for a Deere should really be good for a Case!

I have done both my 310 & 311B as well as as others as part of a routine clutch replacement. Note that the flywheel is indexed. Ring gear may have short rows of teeth worn more than others where the engine usually stops coming up on a compression stroke. That is where the starter Benedix gear digs on starting to turn the engine. Before you pry off the ring gear mark the flywheel so when you flip the gear the most worn gears are also away from the usual starting area. Flywheel turns CCW.

This text is from the 300 service manual. I never heated a used ring gear that hot, 450F in the oven worked for me. Have everything ready, flywheel lying flat, positioning marks eyeballed. Hot ring gear is a big sloppy fit that can move around so be careful to hold it in place until it shrinks up some.

Rustred brings up what I found on my Case 400 251ci engine. The teeth were beveled on one side and not on the other. So I did not feel comfortable flipping it or trying to chamfer each tooth. I thought about rotating but bite the bullet and bought new so as to avoid a repeat at a later date. Not sure on the 148. gobble
