2 Fingers

Hey guys, I'm in need of some help finding a new ring gear for my 1954 John Deere model R. I'm looking for the ring gear that fits on the flywheel of the diesel engine, the part number is R342R and I think it should have an ID of about 23, I'm uncertain of the tooth count. By my research it's the same ring gear that fits 80s, 820s and 830s as long as they're a pony motor start (tooth count is different for electric starter). I've found a ring gear that fits an 820 & 830 but it's too small in diameter, turns out that it fits the German built tractors of the late 60's.

Well guys, so far it's been a bust. McLeod Automotive won't answer emails or the phone, I've tried each twice and left messages on the voicemail. Pioneer Gear doesn't seem to have a part number that crosses to mine so no good there. I'll keep pecking away at it. I can't flip the ring gear but I could knock it off, rotate it about 90 degrees and sweat it back on. It's the same process and same amount of work to rotate it as it is to replace so I'd rather just replace while I'm in there.

First off, it is not a soldered or brazed fit on the fly wheel. So by heating it up to get it off and then heating only the ring gear in an oven to put it back on is not the same as "sweating" it on. They also ten to wear in certain spots and not evenly around the ring, so rotating the position of the existing ring is a viable option. But I'm guessing you knew that because you kind of alluded to it.

But if it is really shot, salvage yard do have Rs sitting in them, so you may find a better one than what you have.

My apologies if I offended your vocabulary by using an unapproved term, I would tend to guess that there are as many terms for heating and setting a ring gear as
there are ways of doing it. Rotating it and reinstalling it is beginning to look like by best option at this point, I fear if I get something out a salvage yard
it will be in no better shape than what I already have. My ring gear has a definite wear spot in it where the starter gear engages it every time and I think I
can rotate it about 90 degrees and it will work forever. The way it is now, if I rotate the flywheel away from the position it stopped in when the engine was
shut off, the starter gear will engage the ring gear without any issue or horrible grinding noises.
