ripper vs. subsoiler

Just recently purchased a S-16 subsoiler. while looking for one to buy however I wonderd what the differnce is between a ripper and a subsoiler? They look similar to me.

A V-ripper takes less horse power than a sub-soiler, also shatters the ground better. Either one will only work when the ground is dry

Started using a 33" subsoiler/V-ripper with a 10" laser tip last year.
What a difference on clay soil that had been no-tilled for 30 years.

About the only thing I can think of is the difference in the shape of the shank. A sub-soiler might have a straight shank that merely makes a deep groove in the soil. The 'ripper' has curved shanks that tend to lift up or 'rip' the soil. Jim
