1949 case vac manual disk brakes , need riveting tool to replace brake lining on 6 in. disk or another way to do this with out the riveting tool , any ideas will be welcomed , many thanks

You can use a drift pin punch of the proper size. You would have to back up the rivet though,

Places like Hanson, and Brown tool all have the tooling, and rivets needed to correctly install the semi-tubular rivets that are typically used on brakes. I've installed thousands of rivets doing brake bands for cranes and, barring having a rivet machine, the easiest way to do them is to use the tools that operate with a small pneumatic hammer.

As far as bucking, all you need is a piece of metal, with a flat head, and small enough to go into the countersink on the brake pad and allow the rivet to rest against it. Put the bucking piece in a vice, and hit the rivets with the tool, and you'll end up with a perfectly formed, cinched rivet.

Just take you shoes to a truck garage. Or a semi truck parts dealer. They should have the rivets and be able to install them. The local shop here rivets the linings on the brake shoes and stock several different sizes of rivets.

If your like me. There isn't a brake repair shop within 200 miles. Taking them to a brake shop is out of the question.

I know Steiner's sell a riveting tool for brakes. I think a lot of the online parts dealer do as well. You could also use a roll pin punch and a helper.

Go to harbor freight, get a set of "transfer punhces".

The rest is pretty obvious.

Use one upside down mounted in a vice as an "anvil". use the pointy side of another on the shell side of the rivet - to round it out and over.

Just be reasonably careful not to snap the break liner itself while pounding down the rivets.

They tend to only sell them in sets, and if you break one... it can be a little frustrating.

I think they are pretty much universal. I have dads old one. made back in the 50's. I have used it on Case,John Deere, Allis chalmers, and Ford tractors. I'm sure dad has riveted every brand from Allis to Oliver.

depending on how thick it was , I would think , the tool looks like a c-clamp on a stand , so if the throat of the riveter was big enough I can't see why it wouldn't work for a lot of diff riveting , got my transfer punches in the mail today , so tommarrow I;m gonna get my brake job finished
