Rock Shaft Housing Cover

Hello,

I have a 1020 John Deere that the back of the rock shaft housing cover cracked on. Is this a common problem for this model of tractor? Anyone have any tips on replacing the cover? I checked with the local John Deere dealer and this part is no longer available. I did some searching online but have not come up with much. Does anyone have any places I could possible locate one of these covers? Thanks for your help.

If cover you're needing is AR77179 / sub AR104660; As shown in PC- 970, JD parts.com; Search, Tractor-part.com ; Several [used part] salvage yards say they have one...

More than likely the 3 pt control valves or L/D mechanism got out of correct adjustment and 3 pt raised too high causing housing to crack. I've only seen it happen once a long time ago. A salvage housing will fit from many different model tractors.

Thanks for the information. The L/D control lever was set in the L/D setting. Where do I find the 3pt control valves? What is the correct settings for the valve and L/D mechanism?

A JD service manual will give the correct adjusting procedure for the L/D mechanism. They're are several steps that must be performed to adjust correctly. Parts key # 12(1st photo) are the valves.

Parts key #6 has the final adjustment with parts keys #1 & 2

I got my rockshaft housing cover off. And it definitely looks like the lift piston over lift and split the cover. I am in process of putting it back together and am trying to figure out which oil I should be using in the transmission/hydraulic system. Per the operators manual it says John Deere 303 or equivalent. Which brand of oil should I be using? Does anyone know what the equivalents are?

303 is old spec's. Today JD recommends Hy-Gard oil or it's equivalent. JD oil have a brake anti-chatter additive.

Has anyone removed the internals from the rockshaft housing cover? I will be trying to transfer the parts from my old cover to the new cover and was wondering if anyone has any tips?

Also in the center diagram provided by "Tx Jim" where does Item 6 hook into on the underside of the rockshaft housing cover?

Item #6(2nd photo) goes against roller in item #2(3rd photo). While you have it disassembled I'd recommend replacing RS control valve seals(items 15,16,18 & 19) plus RS piston seals.
