Rock Shaft

I recently purchased the rock shift arms (P831 & P832) to put on the
late styled power trol rock shaft arms to eventually put an 800 three
point lift. I sized them up to the rock shaft, if there is a way to
put them on it's beyond me. The shaft is quite a bit larger than the
shaft holes (square) on the lift arms. Just how do you put them on
without cracking them or pounding on them to get them on. I don't
believe they will take much pounding before they would break. The two
long bolts have been completely taken out I just don't see how they
would spread enough to fit. Thanks

I don't know exactly what you're working on, but I have an 800 hitch on a JD 50 and the arms fit on the rockshaft easily. In fact - they were so loosely fit that I wondered if I would be able to tighten them up.

Evidently I haven't made myself too clear on what I'm trying to do, not unusual for me, don't get old! Anyway, simply put I just can't get the rock arms to fit on the rock shaft on my late styled John Deere A. The square holes are just way too small on the rock arms to fit on the rock shafts. Thanks

There should be two large bolts used to clamp those square holes onto the rock shaft See the pic of my 70 gas std, helps if you enlarge the picture. You should have no problem if your arms are actual john deere 800 hitch parts.

If the part numbers in your first post are correct, they should fit. The 800 hitch that I have has been on two late A's, a late B and is now on an early 50. The arms fit loosely on all four tractors. I've never had one slip on the rockshaft, but it's something that I visually check quite often, just to satisfy myself. The square holes being "way too small" makes me think that someone has tightened the clamp bolts down with the part off of the rockshaft and maybe squeezed the hole together. It doesn't make sense to me. Why would anyone do that? Can you spread the opening slightly by tapping a screwdriver or chisel in the clamp slot? I know - "way too small" and "slightly" are loose terms interpreted differently by each of us. Don't break it.

By the way - my hitch looks identical to the one pictured on Dan's JD 70.

what, exactly, are the sizes of the shaft and the holes? calipers ought to be precise enough to quantify "way" in to a value.

Where did you get the lift cranks? Do they look like they've been around for 50 plus years or look new? If new looking maybe they're Chinese repro's with recast shrinkage.

First, let me thank all of you for your replies. The rock shaft arms are original John Deere as stamped on them and it's obivious that they are antique. I've finally measued (as I should have done to begin with) and the shafts are and inch and three eighths as are the rock shaft holes. By eye they looked like they would never fit and I did try fitting them without much luck not trying to force them for fear of cracking them. Having looked it over I feel if I grease them and use a porta-power maybe I can ease them together. Wish me luck and thanks again for all the feedback.
