Going back to an earlier thread. Here is
why it's darn near impossible to adjust a
valve with a worn rocker. One pic is with
the indentation of the valve worn into
it.I don't care what anyone says this
won't adjust properly. The other pic is of
the same arm after I ground it on my Sioux
valve grinder with the rocker adapter
mounted.
Some of you on here think you might be
smarter than everyone else and are quick
to dismiss any ideas. I might be a
novice(only 30 years experience) but I
have learned a thing or two. About 29
years ago when I was adjusting the valves
to spec, I rocked them back and forth and
could easily tell there was more play than
there should have been. So I got a dial
gauge mounted up and took an actual
measurent and sure enough there was about
double what was supposed to be there.
At that point I didn't have the equipment
I have now, so I found a local guy to
grind them for me. That got me on the path
of machining and learning how to rebuild
an engine properly. That being said I'm
not the best machinest or mechanic in the
world, but I do have guys driving stuff to
me from 4 plus hours away. Hopefully
someone can learn something from this as I
learn new stuff from sites like this
everyday. Let the bashing begin.

I have resurfaced rockers with an angle grinder with a sanding disc -- works fine -- work slow and easy ! Roy

yay! i dont know why any mechanic would adjust valves with those kind of rockers. very easy to see there are worn . and worn that bad pretty hard to get them set exactly to spec.a mechanic would fix that problem , i would think. but a wanna be would be none the wiser.

(quoted from post at 16:22:25 08/05/20) does it hurt the rocker arm to grind on it.

"does it hurt the rocker arm to grind on it"

If you go slow and easy they are pretty accepting of it.

If you go fast and ruff they'll scream like 'ell.

Wow, that poor rocker was beat to death. The ones on my 560 do not look like that yet. Wonder how many hours are on that one in the top pic. My 560 just passed 2400 hrs before I shut it down for some work & gaskets. Didn't see any ware. I do suspect that head was gone through before I got it. The valves & springs look just a bit too cherry. I could see them looking like that in a LP engine, but not a diesel.

Ever heard of a P&G Valve Gapper? I have set valves with some well worn rockers out of necessity with these. I have also been setting valves with these since the late 50's and still have a few sets. With different adapters, they can be used on most engines before overhead cams became the thing. My son-in-law builds and races dirt track cars. He thought he was so good at setting valves until I reset them on one of his engines. He now uses this too.

However, a badly worn rocker is just waiting to completely fail.
