Rockwell Delta Drill Press

RedMF40

Not from Iceland!
My drill press is acting up. The long shaft that is usually hidden is now showing its face. I didn't even know it was in there. See photos to understand what I'm talking about. I can actually use it like this, but I have to stop the machine when I've finished drilling and manually raise the bit out of the work. I'd rather this not be a long-term solution. Anyone run across this kind of thing? I do have the manual, just have to find where I hid it. Thanks in advance for any help.
BTW it looks different in here. Did someone rearrange the furniture?

Lacking specific model info I am guessing you have lost the fit of a retaining (snap) ring that holds the spindle in the quill. Look at #59 in the attached photo as an example. A bit of web searching using the manufacturer and model info will likely lead you to the proper parts breakdown for your drill press.

This website contains info for 1000's of vintage machinery, including downloadable manuals with parts diagrams and parts lists.
Just have to find your drill press model listed.

Thanks for the replies. There is a set screw that appears to hold that spindle in place. Just have to look through my hex keys and see if I have one long enough to reach in there. The good news is I have a lot of hex keys, a whole drawer full. I should be able to tighten it up and take it from there. I did find my owner's manual. It's the floor model, number 15-081. Looks to be from the early to mid 1960s. Thanks again for the help.

I had a few minutes today, got the set screw lined up with the access port and tightened it down. That did the trick for now, relatively easy fix. You get to it through the side of the housing. I attached a photo but you don't see the assembly in question--just the shaft or spindle or whatever the technical name is. I wouldn't be a drill press repairman---couldn't remember all the new vocabulary.
Thanks for the help.
