do these roller chain breakers work? would be using it on like #41 or 2040 chain. could these be used in the field instead of going back to the shop for the grinder? thanks

Have used them on and off for years and yep they work well if you have the right one for the chain you have. I was given one years ago because the guy didn't have a clue what it was but I have used it many times since even with it not being 100% as in one side had a small broken pin so I have to watch what I am doing with it

Yep, they work great, but you might also need a pin punch on occasion to get the pin all the way through the link once pushed out of the side plate. Beyond that, as someone else said, they are size specific in that each one will work right only on a specific range of sizes. Personally I've got one for the smaller chain (I don't think it's rated for #60 but it works for it), and another for the larger chain sized #100 and larger. All work the same way and all work just fine other than the occasional need for a pin punch as I said earlier.

They work great. The smaller one will do 60 chain but it might not get the rivet pushed completely through the side link.

Another method I've used if I'm in the field away from the chain breaker is to take a small socket, like a 3/8 or 5/16, stand the socket butt down on something real solid, lay the chain on the socket with the rivet you want to punch out over the socket and give the top end of the rivet a good pop with a hammer. You have to hold the chain absolutely flat on the top of the socket. Do the other rivet the same way and then finish up with a pin punch. It's tool abuse at it's worst but I've yet to damage the socket.
