On the cottage in Pa,,which was built in 1999 or so,I have a question.

The roof looks good, the shingles look good,,,except fo one spot.

Where the vent pipe comes out of the roof, the shingles are curling and raising up some. It seems
like the black boot type seal ,(Im not sure what its called) is curling and lifting the shingles
some.Ever here of such a thing?

I always called them "Roof Jack". They were made with galvanized sheet metal, and you got a storm collar with it. Now the come with a rubber like seal.
I see they can be all rubber like.
I still like the sheet metal ones.

If the shingles are on the upper 1.2 of the roof jack, heating them with a blow drier, and gluing them down with Urethane door and window sealer will be permanent. No silicone for me. Jim

Three possible scenarios.
1 cedar shakes
2. cedar shingles
3 asphalt/composition

1 cedar Shakes in time will curl when exposed to moisture and heat. They loss there natural tendency to repel water and need to be resealed after 5-10 years.
remove curled shakes and replace.
Pressure wash and reseal. Spray it on like a paint.
2. shingles are thinner and smooth, but the same applies.
Shingles do this with more frequency. it will happen anywhere.
3. Here it can be cut to tight not enough gap around flange or over heating. this will shows on the tips of the corners of each shingle as they curl up like Chinese roof. Look at the roof vents for a black coloring, this is sure sign of overheating in the roof and attic.
FYI roofing contractor so by just reading your story I come up with this for you to ponder.
hmu, here if you need answers.
