Rooster Comb lift questions

I have a Plowmaster 2-12s. Anyhow I have never used this plow though I want to use it. I am curious, what actually makes that bar realease and drop the plow??? I can see how pulling back on the trip lever un-blocks that bar I just cannot see what makes the bar un-hook and drop the plow. When the lever is pulled the plow does not drop. I see nothing missing. What am I not seeing here??? I sure want to get it working. Thanks for any help.

I've never even seen a rooster comb plow, but no one else seems to be racing to help here.

It sounds like you're expecting the plow to just drop when you pull the lever. Mechanical lift plows generally don't operate that way- instead, when you pull the lever, it engages a pawl that then locks the axle to a partial gear segment, and the rolling action of the wheel lifts the plow. When it gets to the top, the pawl disengages, and the next pull of the rope causes it to rotate back down. Exact methods vary, but the plow lifts and lowers with the wheel rotation.

You mentioned you pulled the lever and it didn't drop- I'll bet if you hooked the plow up and pulled it, it would lower like its supposed to, now that you have pulled the lever. Provided the mechanism isn't froze up, of course.

Thanks for the response. The way this plow is made the wheel rotation is only used when the plow is lifted it has a cast bar with teeth that ride on the inside of the wheel on rollers. The plow drops with a bar that has to come unhooked and then drops it. It is unlike the others that uses a gearbox. I am really puzzled.

Can you put up some good close up pictures of the trip mechanism. I will need to see the whole mech. in detail. We have 5 or 6 model 100s (Ive lost count) and between me and my dad wer have become pretty well versed in fixing them. Usually when they wont trip it is because of weak or missing springs. There is one tortion spring behind a catch paw that breaks out and most people didnt even know they were there because you cant see them. But anyway, pics would help here.

Guess I should have stopped and looked today. I drove right past one 5 times in the neighbors yard while I was hauling hay out of there.
The only roostercomb that I ever had,I bought down at Archbold. Didn't know at the time since I'd never had one,but the whole latch mechanism was gone. I could drop the ladder against the sprocket and raise it,but then it would run right off the end and drop right back down.
I sure wouldn't think there'd be more than a simple latch there of some kind. I just remember the neighbor who has that one saying that he had to slow right down when he raised it or it would drop right back down.

One thought that I had though, they didn't have some sort of transport pin in them that KEPT them from going down accidentally did they?
