root celler

anyone have one, how is it made?
i have a good sized bank behind the house that would be a good
spot for one. i would like to dig back in the bank and build a block celler if i can come up with enough blocks.
just looking for some ideas and tips.

Many ways of making one. The old rock and cement way works but you can get leakage into it and then have a water problem. Or you can do the new way and get one of those shipping containers and cover it up and have a back storm/root cellar. Or you could find a big old tank of some sort and use that. All depends on how big or small you want it. Me I would go bigger then the smaller

Only way you could keep any wall dirt would be if you used some sort of shoring to hold it up or you will end up with a cave in sooner or later and if it happens at the wrong time you could end up hurt or dead

Mine is underneath the old milk house. Cement floor, block walls, and poured cement ceiling. The ceiling is arched and has a steel structure inside of it to hold up the floor of the building that is on top of it. Over 100 years old and still works like a charm.

this old root cellar is in pa ,it was built with rocks and cement ,and has a basement type slanted doors and steps to get into it, I replasterd the walls of it ,It has square shelf like cubby holes built into the walls
