What type of rope would stand up to the most abrasion. 1/2 rope for church bell no sun or weather exposure.

Polyester cord or rope is great for all outdoor weather conditions, so it won't mildew/rot, shrink or stretch. It also has great abrasion resistance and UV protection. It can be bought in many different diameters, colors and lengths.

Most hardware store rope is nylon, which is fine for many purposes but it does stretch. But if you go to a store that sells sailboat hardware, they'll have both nylon and polyester lines. You might also find more exotic materials like aramid (Kevlar), but that's overkill for your application. Polyester (aka dacron) doesn't stretch, making it much better than nylon for many applications. (Marine hardware stores typically refer to nylon as 'anchor and dock line', while everything else is polyester.)

You can get polyester line in either braided or traditional three-strand laid rope. Most yacht line is double-braid, consisting of two hollow braids, one inside of the other. Double-braid can be spliced if you have the right tools. Or, if you want a more traditional look, they make three-straid laid line that is dyed to look like manila rope.

Two popular brands of yacht line are Samson and New England Ropes. A good source for yacht line at reasonable prices is Defender Industries; they sell line by the foot and their price with shipping will be about half what you'd pay at West Marine.

My experience has been poly rope like you buy in town has after several years had bear claws like cable gets from the sun and age deteriorating it. Nylon did not do that from what I have seen in using both. Hemp would last quite a while for what you are using it for since it is under a roof with the bell tower on a church. sun will deteriorate it after while though. I would get a rope of at least 5/8 inch just easier to hold on to for your purpose.

I would use plain old manila rope will last many years, same as used in hay mows for forever. Is a 3 strand and can be eye spliced and end spliced without any problems. joe old sparkey with a lot of rope experience
