Rotary Mower Output shaft

The vertical output for blade shaft on my old BMB
batwing rotary mower broke. It broke just above the
bottom bearing. Can a shaft like that be welded or is it
futile to try?



Also, any suggestions on where to find a replacement
shaft?

I wouldn't weld that shaft.

BMB was purchased by Alamo/Rhino it appears. Check with a Rhino Ag dealer. Another option is to ID the gearbox. Many mower/cutter manufacturers used purchased gearboxes, rather than designing their own, that might be the case with yours. DN Equipment might be another place to check.

In the end It is probably cheaper to just replace the whole gear box. A few years ago I thought I would reseal and bearings in an auger drive gearbox. By the time I got done I could have bought a new gear box for about the same money or less and not fooled around with all the mess and time in it.

There are many shops that can weld up a shaft and smooth it like new. However, they get good money for their work. As Cat guy posted you are probably time and $ ahead to get a replacement gearbox. You don't necessarily need to go with OEM.
