RTU battery

What is the proper battery for an RTU. The group 1, 6 V battery doesn’t seem to have enough room under the gas tank. Many years ago I posted the same question, I looked back through the archives, but I couldn’t find the answer. I do know there was a different battery. When I ordered it from Napa. It lasted for about one year and went dead. i’m guessing it sat on the shelf for five years before someone needed it.

I read that an old 6 volt for VW bug is correct. I think it was group 19L but I am not po
stive.

On mine I ended up shimming the gas tank up on both ends to get the battery under there. Not exactly kosher I know, and now some of the hood latches don't reach, but sometimes you just do what you have to do.

Battery for a VW bug is correct. I made an extension from angle iron to get the battery out from under the gas tank so I could use a regular battery. I used the same battery for different tractors so it was easy to swap also. Can kind of see it in the picture.

My batteries seem to last longer if I use a maintainer.

Thanks for the replies. I think I’ll go with the 19 L battery. I kinda wanna keep it as close to original as possible. I looked online at them batteries and they are twice the price of the group one batteries. this inflation is really eating into my Tractor money. I got the fenders painted today. That just leaves the headlights and the red grill. Hopefully I’ll have it going in a week.

OK I’ll let you know. I just stopped at Napa uptown and with the discount it’s still gonna be 206 bucks. I might look a little bit more around before I purchase one. It was 400 cranking amps.

Interstate used to carry them. The last one I got was from Deka. The CCA is not very high on them unfortunately.
