I have an 8N that has been converted to 12V has a known good battery (took it out of my car)clean connections, power thru the cable to the relay. It will jump off but will stop as soon as I take cables off. Have checked continuity to ground. What to do? Has something reversed itself. Thanks in advance for the help

power thru the cable to the relay"----what does this mean? Do you mean that you have voltage at both ends of the hot battery cable? If yes, then is voltage still there when you hit the starter?

"It will jump off but will stop as soon as I take cables off"---where specifically are you attaching the cables? Battery? Chassis ? Starter motor side of solenoid/relay? Battery side of same?

"Checked continuity to ground"----how? Make a voltage measurement from battery POST (one with cable to chassis) to a clean chassis point, both without engaging start sw and again while trying to start.

"Has something reversed itself. " No, not Halloween yet.

I got it. The ground was intermittent it was there only when I touched the multi meter lead to the bolt. Cleaned it up and away old tractor went. Thanks and happy hallows eve.
