rural road marker

[Dan in North Houston]

This marker recently appeared near the ranch in rural Texas, nailed to my neighbor's fence. This one is where a dirt road meets the county road. I've seen a couple of them at various places, any idea what the purpose might be? Size is about the size of a dessert plate, too small for traffic control.

Had to laugh to myself....you are up there and knew what it was and we Texans don't! I've never seen one and I have been a rural native Texan since '79.

No, we don't have anything like that. And both of these that I've seen are posted off to the side, not where they are easily noticed. I'm thinking maybe some kind of utility marker rather than a road sign.
