ford 2n front mount 6 volt just cranked up been sitting about 3 months getting some rust in sediment bowl wondering how to flush out tank without taking it off can I just run gas out with bowl off to clean

I doubt it. Here's what I do. The stand pipe sits about two inches above the bottom of the tank. Never use the reserve portion of the tank. That way the tank acts as its own sediment bowl. That or replace the tank.
 

the reserve pickup begins to open when u turn the shutoff valve more than a couple of turns from closed.

i'm with harold, i've said many times i believe the reserve pickup on these sediment bowls is a practical joke.

open the shutoff 2 turns and no more. if u run out of gas, don't open the shutoff farther, pour more gas in instead.
 
There are dozens of ways to do most jobs , which is the best ? probably depends on a dozen other factors also . I would remove the sediment bowl assembly and see what I could flush out of the tank . You may get a little or a lot . Some old sediment bowls still have the screen above the threads that will keep large chunks from clogging up the "reserve" tube . If you never open up the reserve then you probably have water trapped and compounding the rust problem . The sediment bowl will also separate out the water .
