just found out, windshield washer solvent container had a hole in it,leaked into my tool box and now my tools are rusty.what is the best way to clean the rust off.i thought maybe using an oily rag to wipe them down.all ideas welcome thanks in advance.

If they're chrome they should wipe down, maybe some Scotch Brite will help.

If not chrome, try Evaporust or similar product. Then oil them down.

Ratchets and such may need to be taken apart.

If they are rusted pretty bad just soak them in Vinegar. Cover them with the vinegar and shake them every day or so and in a few days the rust will be gone. Don't leave them in for more than a few days. Works for me.

Vinegar like MtMan said . Afterwards wash in hot water and dish soap to neutralise it . Wipe with an oily rag to remove all traces of water. I rescued a whole tool box full of ring spanners left on the side of the road that way . Tool box was almost rusted through and spanners dull and coated . Took only an afternoon to brighten them , I still have them rust free six years later.

I like evaporust - an investment, and a bit of a process, but it works well for my continued scrounging of old rusty things I'm bringing back to life.

I you have the time 1 part molasses and around 5 parts water. Drop them in and forget them for about a week or so.
