ok i"m back, i have a sos and i have a very bad leak in the front of my trans. at the bottom, i was wondering is there a seal there that i can replace, and what is the easiest way to change it out. thx twiggy

Welcome back Twiggy,
I know nothing of SOS transmissions except that some people love them and other hate them. But the guys that do know something (good or bad) about your transmission will probably need more info about the tractor that it is on.

You'll need to determine what kind of oil is leaking. There is a possibility of engine oil (rear main seal) leaking out there, or the fluid from the SOS transmission (front pump seal), or the hydraulic system oil (ruptured pressure tube in the front trans housing).

Most likely a front pump seal. Split tractor and replace, fairly simple.

Note: If the old seal has been pushed out of the bore, loctite the new one in place.

I am experiencing the exact same issue on my 67 3400 and after splitting and cleaning up the bell housing I thought I would adapt a 5 hp 240 v electric motor and see exactly which seal was leaking. Well I could not get that sucker to leak, not even a drop!
Very frustrating.

how did you split the tractor, i have looked that up, just wanted to make sure its the same way with a s.o.s as they show for one without. thx

Sorry for the late reply twiggy, been away for a while.

I moved the engine forward and left the rear blocked.

Something like this;

I left the fuel tank and steering on the SOS and disconnected the throttle, choke, fuel line and main harness. Removed the center cowling, rear hyd. supply lines and steering arms.
After that it was just the engine/trans bolts (IIRC)

Of course the usual safety precautions of wedging the front axle to prevent rotation applies.

Be carefull and always stand back and reassess your safety, we want to talk to you and not about you!
Good luck with it.
