Safety Glasses

OP is correct, All tools could cause problems! I have had more problems with grinding than I have had with chain saws and I probably have 50 times the hours on chain saws than grinders. Not bragging, just saying.

I wear safety glasses when operating chain saws at all times. I have had eye injuries 2 times while ginding with a hand held grinder with safety glasses on. Now I wear gogles while grinding.

Please tell me I'm not the only crazy one for wearing eye protection.

I do not think you are a "crazy one" for wearing eye - or hearing and body protection - while using a chain saw.
However, I do believe only a "crazy one" would insist that everybody must think and act as they do.

I use a Pelotor mesh screen face shield w/ear muffs combination.

Not always but when I do, also wear safety glasses designed for science lab work. They have a built in rim on the brow that goes back to your forehead, side protection back to your temples, and impact resistant. But always when I'm using the string trimmer/brush cutter.

I keep a bunch of those glasses near/with the tools I use, so I don't have an excuse not to wear them.

Real nasty stuff like caustics, acids, or spray painting I'll wear goggles.

I wear them . In the Husky manual you are supposed to wear leather chaps on your legs So everybody is unlikely to be doing that

Am I crazy or am I the only one who wears safety glasses or googles when cutting with a chain saw? I watch shows like Homestead Rescue or those Mountain Man shows and no one wears any eye protection when using a chain saw. I was watching one today with Marty Rainey using a chain saw on a massive tree in Hawaii and in a close up view, I could actually see him squinting his eyes to avoid the flying chips. Even on those logging shows I've never seen any of them wearing eye protection.

Please tell me I'm not the only crazy one for wearing eye protection.
I have prescription safety glasses. I find myself wearing them almost all times that I'm outside working. It saves my good pair for indoor living.

Did I actually say that everyone has to wear safety glasses? Show me where I said that. I don't give a crap if you or anyone else loses an eye due to not wearing safety glasses, since it would be their own fault.

You shouldn't wear safety glasses when felling a tree. Don't look at the saw when cutting but rather scan the ground around you looking for shadows of falling limbs. Glasses obscure your view of those shadows. Chaps are important and maybe a face shield. Earplugs also hide the sound of cracking and falling branches. You also need to clear an escape route in case something goes wrong.
This is how I was taught by a logger.
Dave
you were taught correctly. don't forget to wear a whistle as well.

Not crazy at all. I have commented to the SO about Rainey never using hearing protection, chaps, glasses, etc. I suppose he feels immune to injury.

I wear glasses, loggers helmet with ear protection, front face shield (breathable, not solid) and good gloves and chaps. Good boots, as well.

Even with the phone nearby, I don't intend to cut any part of myself off!
I gotta get a good pare of chaps

Everyone!! I care for all of you as authors on this forum. Wear safety glasses or better yet, goggles. We have strict rules at my orchard, - everyone wears safety glasses when pruning and thinning. I can say from experience I've been to the eye doctor for injuries in the shop and in the orchard. The consequencies, pain and suffering are not worth the inconvenience of eye protection.

My dentist makes his patients wear safety glasses, I think it's a great idea, lots of stuff flying around during some procedures.

I'll add one more thing here. I also wear a mask when I'm mowing my 5 acres. I started that one time when I finished mowing and came in the house to blow my nose. It was all brown. I looked at that and figured...that can't be good

Stihl glasses are used by me and my gang.
Good ear plugs too. Bailey has chaps. Gotta be safe. GG

I have been using chain saws for 60 years, and for the first 30 I didn't wear glasses or hearing protection, and had no eye injuries, just lucky, I guess. Now I wouldn't consider it, but I have worn prescription glasses for over 30 years. I should have started using hearing protection early on, but it wasn't available on the farm, so now I have hearing aids. Remember how noisy old Homelite chainsaws were? Really no muffler to speak of! Grinders and skillsaws are probably more apt to cause eye injuries than a chainsaw, at least the way I use them.
Sounds just like my dad. He was a tree faller for over 30 years. Never wore glasses , ear protection or chaps , only a hard hat. That was winter work. And summer was the sawmill. He started out with the earliest homelite and his last saw was the 922 falling saw. I have it. He absolutely hated mccaullogh saws and pioneer also. He also ran them when the mufflers fell off till he got them fixed. They were a good saw back then. And yes it affected his hearing. But back then it was production not whining. He started out falling with a crosscut in the 40’s , imagine doing that all day long.

I wear safety glasses but after 20 30 minutes they fog up grr and i have to use just screen shield. I am 76 and have logged and run chain saws since i was 9 or 10 and have had more than few close calls. Randy
This. I have worn prescription glasses since I was 2 years old. I can wear goggles but not the plastic "safety" glasses, and the goggles always fog up. face shield is a different story. I do pay for hardened lenses in my regular glasses.

There are such things as stupid loggers as there are stupid people in all trades.

Speaking of fire ants, I was using my weed eater, wearing a full face shield and Levis. This one managed to crawl up inside my pants leg and got me on the knee. It was very painful and I went to a doctor for this one. Now when I do weed eating, I use Velcro straps to wrap around the bottoms of my pants legs. That's my knee by the way. I had to pull the red ant off. He was still hanging on when I pulled my pants down.

Does anyone read 6 month old newspapers?
I dislike reading old posts that resurfaced 6 months later.
At some point old posts should be read only, no replies.
