We should never get to relaxed when operating our tractors.

A man was life flighted to a Tallahassee hospital Monday after falling off a tractor and being run over in a yard north of the Sneads city limits.
The 65-year-old man, whose name was not released, was operating a tractor with a bush hog unit at 7798 Lake Seminole Road, when he hit a stump and fell off around 9:30 a.m., according to Jackson County Fire Rescue reports.
The tractor and the bush hog attached to it both ran over his lower right leg, which was broken in the incident.
He was treated at the scene by Jackson County Fire Rescue, then taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital via medical helicopter.
His injuries were not life-threatening, and he was listed as being in stable condition on transport.

Yep, I somewhat foolishly took 'ole John' out for a romp a few days ago after a couple of 'cocktails' ---DUMB !!! Had no problems, but after the first run down and up the drive I parked him back in his spot. I did however forget to turn off the fuel, again, no problem BUT.

A couple of weeks ago I was driving past a home when I noticed that a guy was mowing his lot with a rotary cutter behind a Kubota, I think it was. Nothing wrong with that except he had two little guys, no more than 6 or 8, sitting on each fender. Just when you think there's a limit to how stupid people can be.

The Sheriff's sub-station was only about a half-mile away, so I gave 911 a call and they sent a deputy out.

When I was younger a man in my community got chewed up by his own bush hog. They do a thorough job.

Contrary to what a few people might say, I believe you did the right thing making that call.

My cousins two daughters, both raised on the farm, were going to do something across the pasture & both got on the tractor. Both (20 & 16) were old enough to know better.

They missed seeing the single line electric fence (not turned on) as it rode up on the hood & over the steering wheel.

It knocked the youngest girl, riding on the fender, off the tractor & onto the cultivator. The older girl who was driving got pulled off to the side of the tractor, which kept right on going.

The younger girl was cut up & had a concussion. The older girl got a pretty severe gash across her forehead.

They are both lucky to be alive.

Tractors are not toys.

Wives tales or facts? What are you opinion's/experiences on the following? I was once told that old tractors are dangerous to bush hog with as they could hit a hard stop and the torque could possibly flip the tractor. Most modern equip has shear bolts, etc to prevent such things, but are they effective on N tractors? Reading the owners manual about frozen tire flip over has me concerned about using a post hole digger? Will the bolts shear before the unit flips? I once had a JD 2010 (diesel lemon!) that would sometimes shear the bolt on a 6' hog, but that was a 45'ish hsp tractor. This is only my second tractor-please pardon my ignorance, but I was glad to see this topic post. Any feedback?

See my earlier post about the guy who brought the mini-cooper tot he US- he was using an N to pull stumps and got himself killed a few weeks ago.

A local farmer here just got killed driving his tractor down a road at night. He stopped to herd a calf off the road and he and the tractor were run over.

Nope, they are not toys. I will let me son ride in the wagon behind the cub cadet while I am mowing, and that's it.

Some long-timers here may have heard this diatribe from me before, but I"ll offer it again anyway. I grew up on an Iowa farm, and I had known a particular neighbor (Delbert K.) my entire life. He and his wife were taking care of a young girl while her parents were on vacation. He gave a tractor ride to her and two or three other kids. She fell off and was run over by a rear tire and died. I was a young general-assignment newspaper reporter at the time and had to cover the story -- not an easy thing to do when I had known this guy (same neighborhood, same church, two brothers in my 4-H club, etc.) literally forever. Some folks think it"s cute or fun for children to ride with them on tractors. It is, indeed, great fun for the kids, at least until they die, as did 6-year-old Susan S. You can"t protect kids from every danger, but you can try hard to at least protect them from danger caused by adult stupidity.

When I was a kid, maybe about 8, I fell off the fender of the 10-20 McCormick my father was operating, pulling a sickle mower. I went under the pitman arm, which hammered me pretty good. No lasting damage, but it could have killed me easily.

This may sound kind of dumb but do any of you have kids or grand kids that watch the cartoon "Bob The Builder"? He has various pieces of equipment he uses but anytime he jumps on one to go to a job, he just puts one foot on the running board and hangs on with one hand with the other leg dangling in the air. This of course, because the tractors are alive and drive themselves.

I always thought that him hanging off the side like that was a very bad image to give children.
