Sandblast Cabinet

How many of you have a sandblast cabinet? It seems it would be very handy having one in my shop where I work on a lot of old stuff. What cabinet do you recommend (and why)?

Thank you,
Glenn F.

I have a Scat blast cabinet. Had it for a few years and really like it. Every part is available from glass to gloves. I keep 2 desiccant cans inside when not in use. Very nice to be able to blast while having a cup of coffee.

The commercial units in my price range were all way too small, and the units that were big enough were ALL way over-priced, so I scrounged up some salvaged 2x4s and plywood and made my own sand blast cabinet. If I had it to do over, I would build it a bit larger.

The biggest Harbor Freight is a good starting point. Basically OK, but needs a real piece of glass for a window, more lights, and some changes in the suction tube. Not much cost or work but makes a big improvement. And sales are frequent.

Wouldn't want mine for daily, commercial use, but for me it's fine.

I have a benchtop Jobsmart from TSC. Same as the HF. I use it for glass beading. Had to modify the pickup tube bc it would plug up. The outlet filter plugs up quickly. I have to work out some kind of exhaust for it. The plastic lens clouds up quickly, going to put a piece of glass in it.

I've been going to make one from a IH 76 pull type combine grain bin but haven't pulled it off yet. Did get a big old Curtis air compressor working for it.

I don t have one but my brother picked up a grungy one at the foundry auction years ago. The new one next to it had never been used because it didn't work. It a enough for a V8 block to fit in. Of course it needs every compressor in town to run it.

Whatever you do make sure you have a big enough air compressor first. You need a minimum of 9 CFM at 90 PSI to run a small blast cabinet. If your compressor is too small you'll spend way more time waiting for your compressor to build up air instead of actual blasting.

I have a Scat also. It s great! All consumable parts easily available. I use glass beads and black blast media from Menards. I like the way glass beads clean aluminum and black blast for steel. Prefer not to use silica sand because of the potential health problems. You will need a good air compressor!

Scat Blast. I bought this one about 10 years ago. Great addition to the shop. Make sure you get a compressor with enough CFM and PSI.

I have one from HF and get along with it fine with a few modifications!!! I made a dust collector from 5 gal bucket and use a shop vac works for me!!! I use black blast abrasive from Menards!!!

I have a home built one too. The gloves came from a
predecessor to scat blast. Run the hose from my
pressure tank in the side and have a screen floor on the
bottom. Lift out the floor and shovel the media out a
couple time through, then use it outside on bigger parts.

Bottom of mine is kind of cone shaped with a trap door. Set a 5 gallon bucket underneath, and open the trap door.

I have had good luck with Skatbast too. They are good quality and if you need something for it, TP Tools has it. Bought a Champion air compressor from TP also. Top notch air compressor too!

I brought a used mac tools blaster off Craigslist it's big one with a good vacuum set up. I don't know who made it. I don't use it much it's not in the way and hidden away from my bud's. Bud's will ware it out for ya and be long gone when your air compressor needs major repair. I let a bud use mine he ran it for 3 days. That will not happen again. Get a nice one it will be ready when you need it. I have a somewhat home made pre filter for it that does a great job of removing the water. Air good air and lots of it was already here.
