SC Transmission

The inside of my transmission case (49 SC) is coated with a rust color primer or paint and a lot of it is missing. Is this some kind of special coating, and other than rust prevention does it have another reason for being there? I will have all the gears and axels out of the case this weekend and would like to prepare the transmission case for reassembly . Thanks for the help, and every one stay warm it will be down to 0 here this weekend.

It was a rust preventative but it also served another purpose. It is used to seal the castings. They are porous or have lot of small holes and pockets that collect debris during manufacturing process. The coating helps hold it in there so it doesn't come out and mix with the oil and go through the system. In my opinion, on these old machines I don't think it is worth trying to coat it again. I have seen some that tried and failed as it all come off and made a worse mess. It is yours and do what you want to with it.

When I restore tractors, I wash and blast the insides of the castings. This gets rid of all the loose original coating like you are experiencing. After a good cleaning, I have them covered with the same epoxy primer as we use on the outside of the whole tractor.

Hi
Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't these castings dipped in paint at the foundry so that they did't rust before they were machined. I worked a a plant where the castings came in painted. They were stored outside. I don't think
paint will keep a tranmission from leaking oil.
