Did you notice the where the insulated lead is connected compared to the first picture? I had been using it for years like that and I think I was only charging off one side of the transformer. The old insulator was burned black. I tested those diodes across the tabs and tabs to heat sink with both the diode function and the lowest ohm scale and kept getting mixed results.
