Seal Question

For those of you who have replaced the main seals do you stagger them so that the parting line of the seal is in the block or or do you just align the split in the seals with the parting line of the oil pan.

Ends flush with pan and block, a little proud (smidge sticking up)
Don't really know how you would do it any other way.

You rotate them just enough so that the split in the seal has one cut end down in the block and one end sticking up just a little then you rotate the other half to match. This means that the split ends of the seal are not on the parting lines of the pan. Many split seals are installed this way.

People on this board complain about the rope seals. I've done several of them. Trimmed just slightly proud. Put them in dry and put lots of assembly lube on them. No problems to date. Some soak them in oil prior to installing them.

I would be worried in getting them where you wanted them to be with a heavy 8n pan. I have only done two the normal way and have had no problems with leaks.

Looks like you are referring to rope instead of the neoprene as OP is referring to.

There is a great tutorial on the other site on N engine rebuilding. Covers the rear main seal. Written by John Korshott who used to be a regular around here a few years ago.

What other site ??

The N Tractor Club dot com . The How To section has a lot of info - like torque specs - operators manuals . You can look up info by category , ie hydraulic , electrical , engine , etc .

They have forums also . Good group with a few that post here too . There are fewer questions and replies so it runs much slower . Most of the how to tutorials are OK , some are very helpful , and a few are shade tree patch ups . Nothing wrong with that , just use your own judgement if it is right for you .
