Sears Hydro fluid question

tractor = Craftsman Hydroststic 917.270722
What type of Hydrostat fluid does this machine use ?

Customer angry about the " Oil Kit 799030 "
at $ 32.30 Trans was monkeyed with 90 wt
oil added. Runs good, won't climb hills

If it is a Hydro-gear transmission it should be 20W-50 synthetic. I do have a repair manual for the one in my crafts man. If it is Tecumseh/Peerless I think you may S.O.L. It may be 90wt not much info in the manual for a VST transmaission.

I just put my Murray with the Peerless Hydro 205-024B back on the able list. Mowing a hill with a 20% grade or better with no problem.

I had to take it apart with no previous knowledge of the workings of these things and no available manual. Found the caps holding the hydro pumps down were all four broken off. Cleaned it all up and put in four new 5/16" grade 8 bolts and slapped her back together with a lot of Ultra Copper Silicone sealant. Dumped in 45 ounces of 10W-30 Synthetic Mobil 1 (had it on hand) into the hydro section and some 80-90 weight gear oil in the differential section and away we went. I may dump the 10W-30 and refill with 20W-50 as it does seem to not have the umph in reverse. On the flat it is okay, but backing uphill it struggles and it doesn't lug the engine down so thinking it may be to light a fluid.
