Security Lights

Can anyone recommend a particular brand of security lights, the type which turn on and off automatically, which actually function properly? The ones I bought about 8 years ago, Regent, I think, are not worth a hoot. They come on when they"re not supposed to, and often don"t come on when they should. I have adjusted the sensitivity controls and it doesn"t help much. More Chinese junk.....

If you find a good one, please let me know too. I've used multiple brands over the years with exactly the same results you are having. We can put a man on the moon and bring him back to earth but we cannot make a reliablr motion detector light?

You answered your own question "more China junk". I have not found any that are made elsewhere.

hmm I have had good luck with em. I buy the cheapest ones and have only had 1 I think mess up for the last 8-10 years. I think lightning got it.

I think the only difference in the lights is what box it comes in. They all look the same to me, and last about two years in this humidity.

Main problem with motion sensor lights. The sensor head is often positioned "behind" the lights it's controlling. And suffers false signals.
Some are very sensitive to the sensitivity adjustment.

"We can put a man on the moon and bring him back to earth but we cannot make a reliablr motion detector light?"

No, we can easily make a reliable motion detector light. The problem is that most people, given the choice between price and reliability, would continue to put price first.

I ordered two of those Regent mercury vapor lights recently to replace the ones the power company provided and charged a monthly fee for. When that fee hit $24.00 per month, I decided I could pay for new lights in a couple of months. The new ones look just like those the power company installed 15 years ago.

i use a regular 2 bulb base outside light with compact fluoresant flood lights. i put a timer light switch inside the house. i have one set on front of house and one set on back of house. this way i can change when the light comes on and off. for me the timer switch runs 2 sets of lights, so i dont have to dish out money for more then one timer. i have been using this set up for 5 years now and no problems at all. still original bulbs and they run 10 hrs each day. bought the timer light switch from home depot, but dont remeber the brand.

I've been trying to decide between a motion light and a dusk to dawn light. Already have 2 yard lights but nothing out back by the shop. I think the biggest concern is going out after dark and meeting up with a skunk or other rabid animal.
