sediment bowl

I have a 49 Ford 8N. After removing the hood, I reattached the fuel line and cleaned the glass sediment bowl, installing a new gasket. I used NAPA gasket 730-9506. It leaks around the gasket.
Now I cannot get the gas to go through unless I leave the screw (bottom of glass bowl) VERY loose. If I tighten up the screw, there is NO gas going into bowl after I turn the shut off valve on. I have about 3 gallons in the tank. I cleaned the old gasket material off the rim thoroughly. In all cases it still leaks around the gasket.
Is this an indication of a bad bowl assembly and should I replace the whole bowl assembly that screws to bottom of the gas tank?
I could find nothing in archives, other than other people had gasket sealing problems.
Thanks for any replies.

remember.. liquid doesn't really compress.. so .. once the fuel line and carb bowl is full.. nothing more flows out of the sediment bowl under the tank.. if nothing flows out.. nothing flows in.

you can pull the drain on the carb and let it pee into a jar if you'd like to set and watch ful run thru the under tank sediment bowl.

as for the gasket not sealing.. if your tank tap and glass are clean, true and undamaged.. just try another gasket.

rubber ones used to be ok, but sometimes the cork are better.. but don't put them on dry.. soak in oil or gas first. sometimes I cut mine from thick gasket paper...

Like SoundGuy says, your gasket IS sealing. No gas flows into the bowl because the carb needle valve is closed (because the carb bowl is full of gas). When you start the tractor and gas is used in the carb, the valve will open and gas will flow.

Basic physics says to fluid as air can be called a fluid can not be in the same place at the same time. Your carb float is up since the bowl is full of gas so the sediment bowl can not fill with gas since it is already full of air. Once the engine starts I bet the sediment bowl will fill up. Works the same way if you put your finger over the end of a soda straw and stick it in a glass of soda the straw will not fill up

If it leaks around the gasket there has to be fuel in the bowl..
Everyone I have had that leaked would fill right up it has to the air is being bled off... I have had to trim the brass screen so it just slips under the gasket but does not fit under the gasket were the bowl compresses the gasket to the valve sealing surface... It will leak every time if the screen interferes with the gasket sealing again the valve
