This Jay again. Same 1962 871 Powermaster. Finally got this thing running like a new one and hooked up the brush mower and mowed for about ten minutes. Things were good. Then yesterday went out to mow again. As I was heading down the driveway it just stopped moving under power and seemed to coast. Changed into multiple gears and still nothing. When using the inching pedal and shifting to reverse you can hear it like it is going into gear but nothing happens.

When I originally started working on this tractor I disengaged the shaft on the left side of inspection plate so it would roll without being started. I put it back after getting it running and it was good for s few minutes. Now the tractor rolls regardless if it is engaged or not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pull the plate off the side and check to see if the disconnect is engaged. One of mine slipped out on me.

Did you secure the traction disconnect in the engaged position?

If not, it has probably become disengaged.

If you turn the disconnect shaft too far, the dog will become disengaged from the sliding collar. It will be necessary to remove the side cover to re-engage it.

I'm thinking (hoping?) you are right Dean.
I would have a good look at the traction disconnect. Pull the side cover and see what is going on in there.
I don't think the front clutch could let loose without a pretty significant whizz/bang. If he didn't hear a whizzbang it's more likely in the tranny or on the rear end of the tranny not the front end.

Since you say that it will roll regardless, I agree with Dean, that it seems that the coupler has slid back and become disengaged. That will def be your easiest fix.

Does pto engage with shredder hooked up? If does traction disconnect is disengaged. If pto doesnt work torque limter splines/rivets in hub sheared.

The pto does engage and works fine. I will remove cover tomorrow and check it out. Do I need to drain hydraulic fluid first?

Secondly, I used the universal hydraulic fluid from TSC. Is that ok or do I need something different.

Thanks

Hello Jay,

That is good news, :D . You shouldn't have to drain any hydraulic fluid if it is at the normal level. Worst case scenario, you may loose a little when you pop the cover off. If it is overfull because you have a loader, etc, then you may want to drain some off. Universal hydraulic fluid may be OK for the hydraulics, HOWEVER, it's not uncommon for the seals between sumps to fail and/or leak allowing the two compartments (hydraulic & tranny) to mix. With that in mind, most would recommend using the Ford 134D to be on the safe side.

Post pics when you get a chance, always nice to see these old tractors.

You should use hyd oil with specs that will match with the NH 134D that Chris mentioned. THe TSC oil may, but should list it on the container. Other than the traction coupling, it could be a valve sticking. Let the tractor warm up to operating temp then try shifting.

Yep! You overdid the traction disconnect and now the eccentric is dislodged allowing it to disconnect on its own.

Whatever oil you put in your tractor, no matter which component it is, must meet or exceed the API spec for that component. Ford M2C-41 or New Holland 134-D are those specs for your transmission and hydraulic system.

Awesome troubleshooting guys. Did exactly what you said. It was dislodged. Put it all back together and now it's just fine.

Thanks for the help again!! It's nice to have the old thing working like a new one again.
