My son has found a Ford 871 selecta-speed tractor, and he needs some info on it. And, the transmission. Any help is fine. "Old" sez that tranny can become a money-pit!
Thanks: Rusty Jones

Forgive me! But nope he doesn't! He has a Select-0-Speed! Yes the SOS can be a money pit, as can anything else of the vintage. It can also operate flawlessly forever if well maintained.

You'll have be a bit more specific on what info he needs. I might suggest he obtain an operator's manual and a shop manual, and an SOS supplemental shop manual if the transmission has been updated to a "blue" transmission, study them thoroughly and then ask specific questions if he has some.

It is also a tractor that can not be pull started and it can not be moved if not running with out disengaging the rear end. If he is thinking about buying it he best do his homework on it before he does and know what to look for or it can/will bite him on the back sides. In my area they bring less then half of any of the other models of that series

Well, gee, i was only asking for info! Being a lawn tractor and mower fixer, and the fact that i had never heard of one of them, and was told by my son to get info on the tranny, i figgered i did fairly good, in asking for info.
Also, i learned from the answers, to NEVER buy one of those tractors, since i live near the big city and wouldn't ever need one, nor could i afford to fix one.
I thank all for giving the info i wanted. Turned out, his friend bought the tractor.
Hopefully, he'll have deep enough pockets to repair it.
I am from the automobile bunch, and our terms and names are somewhat different from the farm tractor bunch, so please excuse my ignorance!

No need to get in a huff now. You should see some of the names people call those trannys here.
So you actually did pretty good.
It looks like you're fairly new here. Stick around and you'll see we all get laughed at for one thing or another. It does help to have thicker skin but it's all part of this great board.

I am considering 1, but Dad has another 4 speed trans for it....He refers to it as a P.O.S. instead of S.O.S.

be careful guys! Some of us love our SOS tractors and have had phenomenol service out of them.

I firmly believe that most who now bad mouth these transmissions have never owned or even operated one. They've simply heard horror stories from others of the same ilk and bought into them hook, line and sinker.

How do I arrive at this conclusion? I have 5 SOS tractors in which I know the transmissions are solid as rocks and 1 I'm not sure of because the engine had a huge hole in the side of the block when I bought it.

I personally will not pay half as much for a comparable gear drive as I will for an SOS tractor.

First: I am not a new-comer to this site, but i mainly stick to reading the questions and answers. And giving advice in the L&G sections.
When i hadn't posted anything in Talers, one guy sent me a message, asking what happened to me. I had just been reading, but not sending anything!
I thank everybody who answered my questions about this subject.
Me? I have read about a lot of stuff in here, but had never heard of the transmission of that name, so please excuse my wrong spelling of the name of it.
My son was here yesterday, and i showed him all of the answers i received on it, and thats when he said a friend has it! A friend, who about now, is holding his head in his hands, and muttering:"Where-oh-where, did i go wrong", and eyeing every high bridge in his area! I know i would! Thanks to all: Rusty Jones

....and some of just don't like the way the damn things operate.
I'd take a poor 8 speed any day over a good S-O-S.
I'm not saying I would never own one... but if I did it would be more for novelty value than as a work tractor.
