Anyhoo, bin is empty and wheat is all safely at the elevator. Gonna go do something fun now like fix fence. :>)

If that is the scoop that holds $5 worth of wheat then I need to find a replacement for wheat in my feed and bread in my diet.

When I was in high school, about 47 or so, they came out with aluninum scoops (after the war). We, my dad and me, bought one, a #12, and desided that we needed to be carefull with it. No using it for ice or such. I Never used a steel one again. Still have it. Its still not wore out.

How did you finally seal up the bed on your truck to haul grain? Duct tape, or something more permanent?

I won't even use the bin sweep anymore... the grain vac is 100x better. NO DUST!

Relined it with wood. Stole it from my wife's "house project" when no one was lookin'.

Hey Allen,they got one of those robot vacuum things on the Prairie Farm report. Sure would save the back and some sweat. But then again hard work never killed anybody. ohhhhhh 'bout time for me to take some more ibuprofen, lol

Allen that scoop was part of the reason I quiting wheat farming 20 years ago. Used a airvaccum to load the last semi.

This subject makes me remember when some of Pa's city relatives came to visit us on the farm.

And the "city slicker" mentioned how he used to think he'd like being a farmer until he learned how a scoop shovel worked!

A few days ago, I stopped in at my neighbor's place just to check on him.

I like to check on him from time to time as he's 87 years old and is still farming something like 3 or 4 sections all by himself. I kinda worry about the guy.

Anyway, he is planting wheat and his nurse buggy is broke down. He's filling his 24 foot grain drill with a scoop shovel. I jumped up in the truck and helped him finish off the fill.

When we got done, I told him that I wouldn't be stopping in again until he put those darned shovels away for the winter. :>)

And a hopper bin is 100x better than a grain vac. If somebody could make grain vacs a little quieter that would be a good thing.

A steel one is all we ever had. Scooping wet sloppy snow with a steel scoop shovel will make a man out of a boy if it doesn"t kill him first. We still have that sovel too! Still not wore out but doesn"t get much use anymore either!

Bought my wife one of those (aluminum, to replace the steel one she had been using for horse stall cleaning) for Christmas a few years ago- she was thrilled! Still compliments me on my good taste occasinally when we"re "mucking out". Other popular gifts have been a new JD "compact utility" tractor, and a nice little Stihl chain saw (she can carry it on her horse to brush out trails). Flannel lined jeans, and anything with "Polar Fleece", have also been hits. Just no flowers- she told me early on that she just considers them a waste of money. As the saying goes, "She was country, when country wasn"t cool." Now if we could just sell some more of those $&*^ horses!

14 years ago I gave an assignment to 40 students to calculate the time needed to move 3 ton of wood chips into a hopper using 3 laborers with D handled scoops. I gave them the amount of chips each shovel full would hold on average, and the rate the workers would be scooping.
All but 3 in 40 stated that they would quit if they were given shovels with no handles!!

Yep, quiet would be nice... I always make sure to wear my hearing protection when I'm using ours... nice headphones with the built-in radio so I can listen to some country tunes while I swing the hose!
