Selling Strategy

When you are selling equipment, car, truck, motorcycle, lawn mower, implements or tractor how do you normally price it?

a. List item for the exact price you want and no negotiating.
b. List it 20-25% higher than what you actually want and see what offers come in.
c. Take the best reasonable offer, just to move the piece along.
d. Something else. (Explain your strategy)

Understand that the condition, age, and value to you makes a big difference, but overall, what is your go to strategy that you find works the best.

I tried to sell a 1206 ih once, was a nice tractor with new paint and tires, but the ta was out and the turbo was going bad. I listed it for less than some at $8500. Never got a call. Was complaining to a friend that sold equipment and he said it was because it was too cheap and folks thought it was junk. Re-listed it in the same places with the same pics for $12500 a month later and it sold the first day.

If it's something with lots of life left I'll price it high and see if there's any interest. Junk I want gone is priced to be the cheapest option on craigslist or marketplace.

I'm usually firm. The bank president told me a story one time about his uncle who owned a jewelry store. He had a ring in the window. The same guy would stop in the street and look at it every day but wouldn't come in. He took it out of the window for a few days then put it back and put a higher price on it. He said the guy saw it and came in that day and bought it for the higher price. I usually tell somebody who's trying to talk me down that I've had several calls and I promised them I'd call them back "if you don't want it". Works almost every time and if it doesn't, it works on the next one.

Depends what it is and how bad I want it gone. More valuable stuff that I don’t need gone immediately, I’ll start a bit high and can come down as needed. Cheap stuff that I just want gone, put a cheap price on it and I don’t have to pay the trash guy to haul it off.

Regardless if you’re dealing on Marketplace, somebody is gonna offer to trade a broke down dirt bike for it! My response to trade offers is I only trade for cash.

Peat I think the others covered it. Question is it a popular item everybody wants or a hard to sell little market for item.
I always hated the don't know what i want for it, no price make me an offer crowd. I also like the item price in accordance with what other like items sell for. If there selling $3-500 why price it $1500?

I can be like the soup Nazi if somebody is being to big of a PITA. I've walked away and left somebody standing alone in the yard more than once. One guy called me back two weeks later and asked if I'd sold it yet. I lied to him and told him yes, it was gone. I didn't even want the arrogant so and so back in my yard.

I've sold stuff since I was about 14,and with the advent of the internet things have changed. If somebody took the time to look at a classified, and call the phone number, they were generally serious. There have always been lowbawllers, and insulting people, but the internet really put them in the spotlight.People have always made offers, and was always,I'll take it,or no thanks. Some are really funny.I have a Model A Ford that I wanted $23,000 for.I had a guy actually get mad because I wouldn't take $3000.for it.For me it has pretty much gone to,it is XXX amount of dollars,no offers, what you see is what you get,and what you don't see you get anyway. It has gotten pretty silly in the last 15-20 years.I do not text.If you can not operate a telephone I will not be buying from you and you will not be buying from me.I need directions to find places,I don't have a GPS.If you try to find me with a GPS without me giving you some instructions it is about a 75% chance you will wind up sitting in front of a blue house 8 miles from me.

I found out if I find 10 comparables to item I want sold add up the price of 10 and divide by 1/2. I think every thing listed sells to first guy. Once I had a buyer make me an lower offer. I gave him the look and walked away. He started fishing money out immediately.

I list stuff at the price I think is fair and hold pretty much to it. If I list something I generally want it gone, so I price it accordingly.

I've had the opposite happen when I was looking for an engine for a Toyota 4 Runner. Guy listed one, but was twice what a salvage yard wanted. He was more local, so I shot him an offer (same as salvage price). He got all offended and refused to even talk about it anymore. 2 months later (2 weeks to Christmas) he messaged asking if I still needed a Toyota engine. "Nope, my truck has been running for 2 months."

I buy high and sell cheap, not by choice it's just how it's always worked out for me. Nothing I have to sell ever seems to be very valuable, yet everything I want /buy is always worth top dollar.....no matter if I buy it to flip, or if I keep it for a longer amount of time and then decide to sell it.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one using the "Buy High/ Sell Low" method.

I've been around guys selling and buying my whole life, and seen quite a lot of rude ones. Both sellers and buuyers. No point in being rude,no matter how dumb their offers might be.They won't be buying what they are looking at today, but they might come back and buy something else later.I've never been one of the,I'll scrap it first before I sell it for that crowd. It's just easier to say,no thanks.Years ago dickering was one thing, but it seems like it has turned rude and insulting. It still seems to be OK for old equipment, and old cars.I can answer emails on the computer, but I don't have typing on my phone. When somebody answers an ad I send them my phone number, and also say if you prefer me to call send me a number,up to you. Most of the people I deal with are glad that I actually want to talk. Most of the time we can find out in less than 60 seconds if we really want each others junk.
