serial number

hello , my dad just bought what i believe to be a 8n, can someone tell me where the serial #is. the only thing i can find is a tag just in front of the steering wheel with the pat #s. also , it looks like it has a mag on it , or is the coil built right in on the dist? where can i get a wiring diagram , never fooled with fords before and dont know anything about them. thanks

The link jon gave you is John Smith's website & has great info on N's.

The data plate in front of the steering wheel makes it a 2N or 9N, but it could have an 8N engine. And, as you will soon see from John Smith's website, it has a front mount distributor.

When you ask a question here about the tractor, it's important for everyone to know if it's a 9N, 2N or 8N & if it has a front or side distributor & if it's 6v or 12v. That's because troubleshooting is different based upon what model you have.

You might find the attached link helpful as well, especially tip # 39.
