Servis E60 mower

I have located a Servis E60 bushhog type mower available. Virtually no paint left on it, but the sheetmetal looks good in the photos.

I have no experience with this type of mower. What questions should I ask before making the 100 mile trip to see it?

What is the market price for a mower like this in your area?

Thanks!

Here are the photos I'm seeing. Comments welcome.

So far the things I like are the straight tin and lack of grime around the gearbox. I'm hoping that means the gearbox doesn't leak, but maybe it means it's dry!

That's what it meant on my servis 72.. it was bone dry..

they are a pretty heavy duty mower. that one looks in decent shape. if you can get it cheap.. go for it. it is likely quite old. mine's from the 70's.. they fell under the rhino umbrella at some point.

i put oil in mine and a lil tranny stop leak from an old quart I had, and she stopped weeping :) I topped off with a lil #00 ep grease just for good measure and welded up a few pieces that were broke, and have been using her behind my 4600.

I got her for free.. so wasn't overly concerned about her looks or condition.

she had no paint on her.. but did hav ehte aluminum tags.

I painted her jd yellow as I had a 3/4 a quart of it leftover from long ago work ont he rims on my B. not a great paintjob.. but looks better than rust. primed her with an etching rusty metal primer that, again, I had lefover from another project.

I probably would not have given over 75$ for her int he condition I found her in.. but then.. used hogs in running condition needing minor repair go for about 200$ here..

I got a 5 foot Dearborn/Ford that looked about the same condition for $300 a few years ago at auction. Don't over use it, but done well for me so far, had to replace 2 bolts last month on the bottom trim/wear, heads wore off, can't complain about that.

if its dry, drill that side pipe plug and tap it for a grease zerk...pump it full till ya got grease ooozin out top and bottom...go shred...give it a couple pumps whenever ya grease the rest of it...that old Servis will outlast anything sold today...5 footer oughta be worth 350 if it cuts good and runs quiet.

I think the E60's were built in the 60's. I remember going to Singleton Blvd in Dallas to pick them and rear blades up. I remember the drive line shear pins can in a small gunny(Jute) sack. One weakness of the E60 is where the tail wheel frame bolts on the top of gearbox. They have a history of breaking. But E60 were very good, tough rotary mowers.
