Sharpening bush hog blades

Is it possible to sharpen blades on a bush hog that is attached to a NAA Ford tractor without removing the blades from the bush hog? If so, would I use a hand held grinder of some sort? Just looking for an easier way than taking the blades off. Thanks for ideas.

On most bushhogs you can do it without removing the blades with a 4” grinder. Just make sure you block everything up safely before you get under there.

I’ve pretty much given up on sharpening blades. I’ve come to the realization that it cuts just about as good with dull blades as it does sharpened ones, although it does load the tractor more. I’ve got more than enough tractor anyway.

If you are cutting brush, you do not want sharp blades. Shape blades make sharp stubble and will poke tires. Dull blades kind of shred the brush stubble and don't have to be so careful driving over the stubble.

As someone who doesn't own a bush cutter but is planning on acquiring one soon, that is a good thing to know. Seems like common sense when you think about it.

Thanks.

The practical answer your question is no.
Here are the blades off my Bush Hog brand cutter.
They hang under there as shown with the sharpenable, angled edges towards the top.
So to get under there with an angle grinder between the blade and underside of the deck and try to grind a decent edge on those heavy chunks of steel - with sparks flying everywhere and not being able to get your head high enough to see what you're doing is basically a casualty waiting to happen, a lesson in failure or a very fast episode in learning new cuss words.
It is not that hard to remove the blades.
Then clamp them down to something stationary. and have at it with an angle grinder. I made an outside grinding station for stuff like that so I don't fill my garage up with gritty dust.

I usually do it on the machine when I load it up on the trailer to go mow another place
Leave the back half hanging off the trailer
Plenty of room to get under there an pretty safe
