Sherman install, questions 9N

I have rebuilt my 9n transmission, and installed the proper 7113A counter shaft gear to made with the sherman input shaft. That went smoothly.

I installed the sherman backing plate (with no shims) and the tractor transmission main shaft rotates very freely.
I have installed the main shaft with no shims aswell.

How might I get the main shaft a bit tighter (preload)?

Will installing the sherman (with appropriate shims) give the main shaft its preload?

Also, which manual illustrates this setup process?

Thanks in advance :)

Its been awhile my first thought put shims behind the bearing cup, I have only played with one I had the shims in my stash of automotive differential shims... I sold one to someone here I sent some of those shims with the Sherman just encase he may have needed them to fine tune it...

If that looks like an option you will need to find someone that does differential work and look thru his stash if shims...

Thanks for the input. My issue is, i have no shims in the main shaft or on the sherman backing plate, and my main shaft still doesnt have enough preload.

More shims would only decrease the preload further.

Read what Hobo said carefully. Shims placed [b:dc6bf87d88][u:dc6bf87d88]behind[/u:dc6bf87d88][/b:dc6bf87d88] the bearing cup will move the cup outward - effectively lengthening the shaft and increasing preload.

'm picking up an auxiliary for the 8N. Never split an old N and want to have everything on hand. My spare shims are mostly from the independent Explorer and 10.25" axles. Are they the right OD/ID for the 8N?
