Sherman making racket?

My 2N has started making a 'roaring" sound, kinda like a dry bearing, while running. Sounds like it's coming from the sherman 2 speed. Doesn't matter what gear it's in, or if the clutch is pressed or not. Racket is still there. Actually, I assume the sherman is behind the clutch, so with the clutch depressed, all moving parts behind it should stop, and noise is still there. So, I suspect it to be forward of the clutch, mabe pilot bearing? Is it an actual bearing like an A model Ford, or a oilite bronze bushing like later model? But with everything spinning it roars, and with everything stopped, but engine running, it roars.

Do you have the needed free play on your clutch pedal if not it could be a throw out bearing that keep touching the pressure plate fingers and spins and is not about to lock up and cause major problems

I would say probably the pilot bearing but it is easier to check to make sure the starter is disengaging.

Pilot bearing only functions when the clutch is pushed down. When clutch is let up the clutch plate, transmission shaft and flywheel all turn together: The pilot bushing only centers the transmission shaft when the clutch is engaged. If the free play is to tight as mentioned above the throwout bearing is being held against the clutch fingers making it turn continuously. If the bearing is rough it would make this type of noise.

Yep starter is fine, Clutch is good with proper free play. Yes, It dawned on me this morning; if it were the pilot bearing, it would quit when the shaft was turning, and if a bearing anywhere behind the clutch, noise would quit when clutch was pressed, and everything in the transmission quit spinning. So, it must be in the engine somewhere. Mabe water pump? Or governor? I'll look into it deeper tomorrow, and report back. But it sure sounds like a ball bearing running dry.

Found the source of the noise. Strange how sound is transmitted through iron, and steel. What sounded like coming from bell housing, is actually at the other end of the engine. Now to get a water pump overhaul kit.

Well I guess there's not a kit available, so I'll buy a new pump.
