Sherman step up/down

Whats the "going" price on one that is supposedly in "good shape". Profeses bearings & gears are "in good working order"...that could be a loose term I understand, its really up to how finicky a fella is I suppose.

Dont really mind one that might be a bit sub-par for a purist, but by same token dont want one that is going to cause an extra split either!

Maybe a guy should just plan on going through it & inspect/repair everything he finds before installing?

Anyhoo...just wanted to kinda pick a few brains on which ballpark a decent one should be in as far as cost goes!

Thanks in advance guy's

Scotty

Ah but which of the many is you wanting. There is the over drive/standard the under drive standard and the combo. There is and never has been a step up step down and sorry but hate to have them called that

Ah...you got me there...sir!!

Its a combo, from what I can tell from the pictures it is pre 3rd generation as the shift rails are exposed, & it has a ford top cover so its not a 4th...unless its been Heinze 57'd....
Cant really tell if it has grey paint (if it does it is pretty light grey, but it almost looks like there is no paint on it.

Saw a step down on there the other day for about that if I remember correctly....
I was pretty sure that the one I'm looking at was a pre 3rd generation, but now I am not so sure. I went & did some research on John Smiths site and the top cover fits for a pre 3rd...but the slinger sounds more like a late version as it is ribbed from what I can tell instead of the "fanned" style.
It could just mean that somone has rebuilt or replaced along the line I suppose.....

Most from the ones I have seen where never painted due to the fact they where in side the bell housing and where going to end up with grease and oil on them any how and paint and stuff like that do not mix well and would clog up the cotter pin drain hole

Ah so that is why I said what I said I have a 1960 I think 841 with the Sherman combo and all the ones I have ever seen where not painted and the ones I have seen where the ones from the 801 series or ones in those years

The 57 & later did not go back to open shift rails did they?
I tried posting some pictures here of the one I'm looking at but, it makes them pretty blury for some reason. Guess maybe if we had a few beers they may come into focus!!!!
