Sherman Trans

I am tearing down my Jubilee to paint it. It has a Sherman 3-speed trans that Makes alot of gear noise when in hi or lo range, but no gear noise when in direct drive.I hope the sherman trans just needs fluid. What kind of fluid does it take, how much, and where is the fill? I plan to split the tractor this weekend to see if I can see any other reasons for the gear noise. Thanks for any advice.

If noisy, the transmission needs work. If not noisy in direct, suspect cluster gear bearings or worse.

The Sherman transmission is lubed from the main transmission. If you have it out for disassembly and repair, you should fill it before reinstallation as it will take some time to self fill from the main transmission.

Dean,

Can you explain please? I thought a Sherman was self contained as far as oiling goes, but thinking about it now it makes sense that they oil from within the tranny compartment. I'm guessing that they refill & drain (from overfull) through the shaft bearings whilst in use?
