Sherman transmission

Hi everyone, I have a Sherman step up step down transmission on my 8n ford tractor when Im in the step up it working great, when I put it in low gear it whines something terrible pretty loud.
I recently had it apart because it wasnt working correctly low gear didnt work and in the higher gear kept popping out of gear, when I first put it back together lower gear worked great until I put it in higher gear now every time I put in lower gear it whines.
Any suggestions or thoughts of what it may be?

Did you fill it with oil before you put the tractor back together

A loose pivot point on the control mechanism could cause it to not travel as far as needed for correct operation. A worn shifter contact point, or worn groove in the sliding gear may also be suspect. Nothing should be loose Jim
